The real name of the character was Arsene Lupin but when a politician with the same name protested against it the name changed to Arsene Lupin.

Assane is a gentleman thief whose father came to France as an immigrant from West Africa in search of a better life and there he was framed by his corrupt boss Hubert Pellegrini for stealing his expensive diamonds. When the Diop senior goes to jail he commits suicide out of shame and disgust. He gives his son a book to read which inspires him to become a gentleman thief.
