The drama series revolves around the main character of Melinda Monroe. Mel is a woman troubled by her past and wants to get rid of her painful and ugly past memories. She thinks going and settling in a place away from the town will help her forget her past. So she answers the job requirement advertised in a newspaper for a nurse in the town of Virgin River which is far away from the city.

She gets the job and moves to the new town located in the remote suburbs of Northern California. As she arrives and starts her job there she realizes life is not so easy and relaxed in the town as it seemed so from the outside and that she must learn to heal herself before she can truly start to feel at home in the new town and make it her permanent home.
